Cybercriminals are Out to Get Us with Judy Taylour
Identity theft, phishing, vishing, spoofing, and other types of fraud are increasingly targeted at older adults. According to Federal Bureau of Investigation data from 2024, seniors aged 60 and older submitted over 147,000 complaints, with losses totaling nearly $4.9 billion—a sharp 43% increase from 2023. In 2025, new scam patterns are emerging fast and are especially dangerous for older adults. Some of the most prominent include: AI-powered deep-fake impersonation scams where voices or video are used to pretend a grandchild or family member is in urgent trouble. Sophisticated investment “pig butchering” schemes that combine romance or friendship with convincing fake investment opportunities, often using cryptocurrency. Tech support impersonation fraud where scammers claim your computer is infected, gain remote access, and then steal money or identity information. Government or benefit-impersonation scams where victims are told their Social Security or Medicare benefits will be cut unless a “fee” is paid immediately. This presentation will explore these evolving scam types, highlight how they work, and provide practical strategies you and your loved ones can use to detect, avoid, and report them—so you stay protected.
